When Is the Best Time to Book Newborn Photos in New Jersey?

Expecting a baby? Here’s when to reserve your newborn session, why booking during pregnancy is recommended, and what to expect once your little one arrives.

When Should You Book Newborn Photos?

The best time to book your newborn photography session is before your baby arrives, ideally during your second or early third trimester.

I typically recommend reaching out around 20–30 weeks of pregnancy. This gives us time to plan your session, discuss the style you’re looking for, and reserve space on my calendar around your estimated due date.

Because babies rarely arrive exactly when expected, your due date is used as a placeholder. Once your baby is born and you’re home recovering, we’ll choose the actual session date based on baby’s arrival and availability.

What Is the Best Age for Newborn Photos?

For those sweet, sleepy, curled-up newborn portraits, I recommend scheduling your session when your baby is around 5–15 days old.

During this stage, babies are often sleepier and naturally settle into the cozy poses commonly seen in newborn photography. It’s also the perfect time to capture all of those tiny details that change so quickly—from little fingers and toes to soft newborn features and sleepy expressions.

Every baby is different, so I always follow your baby’s cues throughout the session and allow plenty of time for feeding, soothing, and breaks when needed.

What If My Baby Arrives Early or Late?

That’s completely normal. Since babies arrive on their own schedule, your newborn session is not locked into one exact date months in advance.

Instead, I reserve space around your estimated due date. Once your baby arrives, simply let me know they’re here and we’ll choose the actual session date based on baby’s birth date, your recovery, and availability.

Whether your little one arrives early, right on time, or a little later than expected, we’ll adjust the session accordingly.

What If My Baby Is Already Born?

If your baby is already here and you haven’t booked newborn photos yet, reach out as soon as possible. I occasionally have last-minute availability and may still be able to fit you in.

While the first couple of weeks are ideal for those sleepy, curled-up poses, beautiful newborn portraits can still be created with older babies too. They may be a little more awake, stretch out more, or need a slightly different approach.

Every baby is different, and the session is always guided by your baby’s comfort and cues.

Studio vs. In-Home Newborn Photography

When booking your newborn session, you can choose between a studio newborn session or an in-home lifestyle session, depending on the look and experience you want.

Studio sessions are best for families who love those classic, posed newborn portraits with wraps, props, and carefully styled setups.

In-home lifestyle sessions are more relaxed and natural, focusing on your connection with your baby in the comfort of your own home. These sessions may include cuddling in the nursery, snuggling on the couch, or simply capturing those quiet first days together.

Both options are beautiful—it really comes down to which style feels most like your family.

Do I Need to Bring Anything to My Newborn Session?

For studio newborn sessions, I provide the wraps, outfits, props, and accessories needed for your baby’s portraits, so there’s no need to bring a lot with you.

Before your session, I’ll also send guidance on how to prepare and what to pack, including feeding essentials, diapers, and anything special you may want included.

If there’s a sentimental item you’d love photographed—such as a special blanket, keepsake, or meaningful accessory—you’re always welcome to bring it along.

Can Parents and Siblings Be Included?

Yes! Depending on the newborn collection you choose, parents and siblings can absolutely be included in the session.

These are often some of the most meaningful images from the entire gallery—your baby curled up in your arms, tiny beside an older sibling, or everyone together during those first days as a growing family.

I always encourage parents to step into a few photos, even if you’re tired or still recovering. Your baby will never be this little again, and these are the kinds of images that become even more special with time.

Why Booking Early Matters

Newborn photography has a very small ideal window, which is why booking during pregnancy is so helpful.

Reserving your session ahead of time gives us time to plan the style of your session, discuss any special requests, and make sure there is space on my calendar around your due date.

It also means you have one less thing to think about after delivery. Once baby arrives, you can focus on resting, recovering, and soaking in those first days together while knowing your newborn session is already planned.
